Cory’s 2025 reporting highlights progress on development of major infrastructure projects
Cory has published its 2025 Annual Report and Sustainability Report, setting out the progress it has made in decarbonising its operations and the waste it processes for customers, while investing in critical infrastructure for London and the wider South East.
Operational highlights include:
- 800,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill
- 328,000 tonnes of carbon saved
- 69,000 tonnes of recyclable waste sorted
- 542 GWh of electricity generated from waste
Construction of Riverside 2 and the redevelopment of Cory’s Barking Waste Transfer Station progressed throughout the year, and both remain on track to become fully operational in 2026. Cory also continued to bolster its river operations, investing in 61 new barges and more than 700 waste and ash containers, further strengthening its use of the River Thames as an efficient and low-carbon transport network.
2025 was a pivotal year for Cory’s decarbonisation strategy, as the business was granted a Development Consent Order for its planned Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project. The project is expected to capture around 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030, with captured carbon liquefied and transported by ship via the River Thames for permanent storage under the North Sea through the UK’s first non-pipeline CO2 shipping solution.
Cory also advanced plans for its c.27km heat transmission pipeline, which was designated as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The project has the potential to connect heat networks across London, supplying 300,000 homes with low-carbon heat generated from waste while helping unlock significant investment in London’s heat network infrastructure.
Dougie Sutherland, CEO of Cory, said: "2025 was another year of great progress for Cory. We continued to safely and reliably deliver essential waste management services for London while investing in the infrastructure that will underpin the transition to a lower-carbon future.
“We made significant progress across a number of strategic projects, all of which will play an important role in strengthening energy security, supporting economic growth, and reducing carbon emissions. I would like to thank everyone across the business for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Their dedication continues to drive our success and our ambition to reach net zero by 2040 or sooner."
